Of his three or four brothers, only Elchonon Chunen found him after the war. He also had a sister Rachel and a brother Nachum. Seymour was too young for school, so he went to cheder. My job was to make the ice cream. They were bombing that bridge so nobody can get through…. I was asleep and I was near a window and they woke me up. My father and mother had to take care of themselves because my job was to take care of my grandparents; they were very old. I had a bicycle and hooked it up to a wheelbarrow and pulled them with my bicycle until we got to the woods. I recall the bombing lasted about four hours.

Thorns, spines and prickles are some of the anti-herbivore defenses that plants have evolved. They were recently found to be commonly aposematic warning coloration. However, the physical anti-herbivore defense executed by these sharp structures seems to be only the tip of the iceberg. We show that thorns of various plant species commonly harbor an array of aerobic and anaerobic pathogenic bacteria including Clostridium perfringens the causative agent of the life-threatening gas gangrene, Bacillus anthracis , and Pantoea agglomerans.
Septic inflammation caused by plant thorn injury can result not only from bacteria. Medical literature indicates that thorns, spines or prickles also introduce pathogenic fungi into animals or humans. Dermatophytes that cause subcutaneous mycoses are unable to penetrate the skin and must be introduced into the subcutaneous tissue by a puncture wound. The common microorganism-thorn combinations seem to have been an important contributor to the fact that so many plant thorns are aposematically colored, as a case of convergent evolution of aposematism in these organisms.
Thorns, spines and prickles are a common anti-herbivory mechanical defense in thousands of plant species, especially in arid regions. By wounding, thorns may introduce bacteria or fungi into herbivores and cause them severe infections that may be much more dangerous and painful than the thorn’s physical injury itself.
In a recent publication we showed that thorns from Phoenix dactylifera date palm and Crataegus aronia common hawthorn harbor an array of pathogenic bacteria. Thorns from several date palm and common hawthorn trees were sampled in the Jordan Valley and Mount Carmel in northern Israel respectively. Every typical mature individual of the two tree species carries thousands of conspicuous aposematic thorns.

Matchmakers access members’ profiles to find and suggest potential matches, and members can also search the data base to see limited information about members, excluding photos, names, and contact details. Tens of thousands of Jewish singles and marrieds alike have done so through Rebbetzen Esther Jungreis’ Hineini organization. Many married couples first met each other at a Hineni class or social gathering for singles.
Hineni also offers matchmaking services. Each year, Inbar celebrates a number of weddings for men and women who have met thanks to its services. The site employs many features, including private mailboxes, so users can communicate safely until they choose to share personal information. The site also offers services of a matchmaker to recommend potential dating partners from the list of members.
Simchat Torah is a component of the Biblical Jewish holiday of Shemini Atzeret “Eighth Day of Assembly” , which follows immediately after the festival of Sukkot in the month of Tishrei occurring in mid-September to early October on the Gregorian calendar. The main celebrations of Simchat Torah take place in the synagogue during evening and morning services. In Orthodox as well as many Conservative congregations, this is the only time of year on which the Torah scrolls are taken out of the ark and read at night.

During a recent meeting of the rabbis of St. Louis with Jewish Federation of St. Louis President and CEO Brian Herstig, a colleague expressed our collective sadness at not being able to attend a funeral for our friend Rabbi Joseph Rosenbloom, who passed away at the age of 91 on Aug. Sometimes, the only way to remember is to forget. True, most of us worry when we begin to forget things that we once easily remembered.
We fea…. I now know that he is a very b…. Henry Rosenblum followed what is now a family tradition: a bar mitzvah abroad. Amy Fenster Brown with her son, Leo, at his bar mitzvah earlier this month. I see lots of hands. The world has changed plans with regard to work, school and grocery shopping. My younger son, Leo, was all set and ready to go when his bar mitzvah came to a screeching halt just two weeks before its original date. He impressively rolled with the punches and handled the postponement like a champ and a true mensch.

The Morim Shlichim program recruits Israeli teachers and places them in North American schools for three year s.
As Coordinator of the program, Diti is delighted to work with many talented and dedicated people. Diti believes that sharing her personal point of view about Israel is vital to helping people connect to the country and to their heritage.

Like other synagogues, Congregation Etz Chaim is still deciding when and how to reopen its sanctuaries to the public for services, simchas and other social gatherings after shuttering for COVID Meanwhile, the Marietta synagogue opened its newly renovated sanctuary to its first wedding May And in traditional COVID style, it was a simcha that adhered to strict social distancing, and instead of gown and tux, veil and bowtie, the bride and groom, along with a handful of family in attendance, dressed up and sported the latest in COVID designs — masks.
The couple had sent out invitations, which resulted in a steady stream of positive responses until the health crisis began affecting daily life. Devastated, the couple realized they had to change course, and approached Rabbi Dorsch about the possibility of having their ceremony on the same date at the synagogue in which Cohn attended Hebrew School and became a bar mitzvah.
The plan was to have a traditional ceremony at a later date that included a larger crowd, Lievense said. Rabbi Dorsch said the wedding worked because all in attendance had adhered to strict quarantining. Most of the party, the Cohn family, sheltered at least two weeks in advance of the wedding in their Marietta home. The bride and groom, in masks, stood under the chuppah on the bimah holding their own wine glasses and the rabbi stood at least 6 feet from them.
