Supporters of the Bolsheviks—known as the Reds—faced off against the Whites, anti-Bolshevik forces loyal to the provisional government, in a power struggle aimed at defining the future course of the Russian state. In this struggle, the leaders of Britain, France and the United States definitively favored the Whites, harboring as they did an intense fear and misunderstanding of Lenin and his forces of radical socialism. With some hesitation, they determined to launch an intervention into the Russian civil war, aimed at defeating the Bolsheviks and installing the Whites in power again, hoping this eventuality would draw Russia back into the war against the Central Powers. A document issued by the U. State Department in July set the terms by which the U. A small force would also be sent to Vladivostok, where a force of Czecho-Slovak troops bent on continuing the fight against the Central Powers had claimed the Russian city as an Allied protectorate early in July. The Allied intervention in Russia would continue throughout the end of World War I and the peace negotiations at Versailles, from which the Russian Bolsheviks were excluded. By October , White Russian forces were in full retreat in the south, and Lenin and his Bolsheviks had effectively consolidated power for their regime. Recognizing the futility of their intervention in the costly and distant conflict in Russia, Allied forces began to withdraw.

His fateful meeting with a former Stalinist bodyguard leads to the uncovering of one of the world’s most dangerous and best kept secrets.
He is led unwittingly through murder and intrigue towards his own personal “Holy Grail” – Joseph Stalin’s secret legacy – a legacy that could change the face of Russian history forever. Written by Christopher Hall. Just thinking that it would be some good casual watching, I settled down to this two part drama on BBC 1 in Initially I didn’t expect much but soon I discovered that this low profile production was actually one of the best dramas that I have seen. My overall impression was that a lot of time, thought and effort had been put into the production making an excellent final product.
Not only was the acting good but also the storyline, scenery and directing. I think that the only disappointing thing about the film was the fact that it was not released in the cinema.

Archangel Fine Arts Museum is one of the biggest art museums in Russia. The permanent collection of the museum comprises over 30 thousand works of Russian art, dating from the 14th century up to the present day. The museum was founded in on the basis of the art collection of the Archangel Local History Museum. The collection of the art museum at that time contained about one thousand and a half works of art and held mostly works by artists from the area.
In contrast to the most famous Russian museums whose origins lie in gifts and bequests from a variety of donors and patrons, the Archangel Museum of Fine Arts developed its collections by means of an active acquisitions policy based on numerous expeditions to outlying parts of the region mostly in s – s. As a result of this policy the Museum has a unique collection of Ancient North Russian art medieval icons and wooden sculptures and also rich holdings of North Russian folk art, including peasant festive and every-day costumes, embroideries and weaves, wooden carved and painted objects, artistic metalwork and ceramics.
Works of Russian prerevolutionary and contemporary art have been acquired for the Museum from private collections of Moscow and St Petersburg and in artists’ studios. The rooms devoted to Russian art from the 17th to the beginning of the 20th century include works by almost all the best-known Russian artists, such as F. Rokotov, K. Brullov, I. Aivasovsky, I. Repin, I. Shishkin and many others.
